Some Others In Our Feral Abandoned Cat Colony

I thought I would introduce you to more of our colony here. Midnight and Grizzly were litter mates - both feral. They are very skittish, never letting us get closer than about 4-5 feet, even when feeding them. Her mother, who disappeared late 2007, was so scrawny that I called her Toothpick. I remember the moment in time when I stood looking at her from our dining room window with my husband. He said "Should we feed them?" I was reluctant, but said we should since my compassion for suffering creatures would allow nothing else. I had no idea at that moment how totally consuming the management of this colony would become. Of course, it is also very gratifying to be feeding them and watching them exist in relative health around us.

Midnight (male) is the one laying on the stones. Grizzly (female) is on the wood porch in the photos here. I named her Grizzly because when she was a kitten, she looked like a grizzly bear with the prominent tuft on her back. I have no idea why she takes such poor care of her fur compared to her brother midnight. And I wonder if they have some Maine Coon in them because of that unique fur pattern around their heads. Tufty was their sister - see her photo toward the bottom of the blog on the right side. We found someone to adopt Tufty but she escaped - I will leave that story to a subject for a future post.

I would be extremely grateful if you feel inclined to donate to the management of this feral/abandoned colony, using the PayPal button on the sidebar. Thanks for reading my post - leave a comment if you like. I plan to share more about my experiences and what I have learned from managing this homeless colony.

I hope to write soon about my experience with Tufty - should be very instructive and useful for anyone who manages feral colonies.

Please let your friends know about my blog.

Thanks for introducing us to Midnight and Grizzly! I have added a link to you guys on my page. I am very slow usually about updating that stuff so it took a couple days!

They are rather different looking aren't they. Even though we are away from home we aren't feeding homeless animals but some that we don't think are getting enough food. It's good to make a little difference.

Kudos to you Debby and Stew! We have ferals too and not enough $$$ to deal with all of them properly but we try. At the moment we have a very sick little cat from the tribe in our bathroom. Purr for us?

It was nice to know about Midnight and Drizzly.
I have added you to Sherkhan's blogroll- so that the other cats can find you while looking for something to read and to my Google Reader, to keep up with the new cats.

Thank you for the wonderful work you do with the "homeless".......I maintain Sam and Andy's blog, and usually they do the talking (grin) but today I wanted to write this. I know exactly where you are......years ago when I had my house, that was me. I am retired now and no longer own my home so can no longer care for the homeless kitties....it does my heart good to know that there are others out there that are doing it.

I was also very pleased to add a link to your blog. Please keep in touch....Judi/Mommy
